Most of us know the importance of incorporating organic food into our diets and limiting our exposure to chemicals, artificial ingredients, and additives as much as possible. But have you ever considered the chemicals in everyday fabrics, such as cotton?
Palmpring Organic Mattress only covers their mattresses with organic cotton. Organic cotton is breathable, gentle on the skin, and an all-natural material, but there a few more very important reasons why we are so passionate about it being one of our four materials.
How is Conventional Cotton Produced?
Regular, non-organic cotton, is grown using far more insecticides and pesticides than most people could even imagine. According to the National Wildlife Federation, “cotton is one of the most chemically intensive crops in the world” and “according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 84 million pounds of pesticides were applied to the nation’s 14.4 million acres of cotton in the year 2000, and more than two billion pounds of fertilizers were spread on those same fields.” And if that wasn’t enough chemicals already, the cotton seeds are already pretreated with agrochemical, which is another added pesticide.
Cotton is one of the most genetically modified crops in the world. These chemicals can seep into your bloodstream through contact with your skin, potentially causing cancer, heart palpitations, skin rashes, and asthma, among other illnesses.
Then there are the hardworking men and women who work in cotton farming. They are constantly exposed to pesticides, GMOs, and other toxic chemicals. They have been known to suffer from pesticide poisoning and cancer. Even the people who live in the surrounding rural areas of these cotton farms are at an extremely high risk for developing the same potentially deadly illnesses.
These pesticides are known for being extremely harmful for the environment. They will not only harm the plants and soil in which they are treated in, resulting in unsustainable farming, but will also spread to the surrounding ecosystems and wildlife, especially birds and fish.
What is the Organic Growing Process?
Organic farmers are committed to working in harmony with nature. They only plant cotton with untreated seeds. They use methods that are sustainable, especially for the health of the soil and ecosystems by rotating the crops. They never use synthetic fertilizers, chemicals, pesticides, defoliants, or GMOs.
A major way organic farmers work differently is by growing a protective crop, such as corn, as a trap crop. A trap crop is a plant that attracts insects and pests, thereby saving the main crop without the use of pesticides. They also use a natural form of defoliation, which is the grazing process to remove parts of the plants, by waiting for the natural frost from the changing seasons.
Benefits of Organic Cotton
There are numerous benefits of organic cotton, for the environment and for people everywhere. Growing without chemicals, pesticides, or GMOs, preserves the soil, air, and won’t damage wildlife or ecosystems. This also creates a sustainable way of farming and providing for the local farming communities.
According to the international non-profit, About Organic Cotton Org., organic cotton “uses 71% less water and 62% less energy” and that “organic cotton is 80% rain-fed, which reduces pressure on local water sources. The absence of chemicals also means that water is cleaner and safer.”
Most importantly, growing and purchasing organic helps the farmers, local community and everyday consumers stay safe. Farming organic cotton keeps the farmers and community free from toxic chemicals in the field, chemicals that would contaminate food and water, and especially the chemicals that spread throughout the air. And for the consumers who only purchase the organic cotton once it’s made into clothes, bedding, or mattresses, they won’t be exposed to the toxic chemicals seeping into their skin or polluting the air in their homes.
